Introduction

The Covid-19 pandemic
has affected every part
of daily life and created
fundamental changes in
the ways we approach
education, relationships,
and social activities.

The Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority wanted to gain a better understanding of how parents and children felt they had been affected by the pandemic. So, we partnered with NYU Abu Dhabi to create our survey, Life During Covid-19: Young Children and their Families in Abu Dhabi Emirate.

We spoke to

800

parents, each with children
aged up to 8 years old, living
in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and
Al Dhafra.

After surveying them in September 2020, we returned in February 2021 to find out how their experiences had changed during the pandemic.

Covid
outbreak &
job losses

In June 2020, the United
Arab Emirates (UAE)
handling of the Covid-19
pandemic was labelled
exemplary by the World
Health Organisation.

Restrictions were imposed in Abu Dhabi and across the UAE in order to limit the spread of the virus, but these had several effects for the population in areas ranging from employment and education to mental health and physical wellbeing.

Around

1 in 5 parents

that we surveyed experienced job loss as a result of Covid-19, either themselves or in their immediate family. Many parents also perceived the feeling of economic hardship brought about by COVID-19.

The number of families with children
aged between 4 and 8 years old who
said they experienced this hardship
remained the same

but the situation worsened for
families with younger children over time.
